Being the Change“We but mirror the world.  All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body.  If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change.” – Mahatma Gandhi

How-to-Undertake-a-MakeoverBrian was dismayed at the results of a 360-degree assessment he’d received through his company.  Although he was greatly appreciated for his strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, the feedback showed his style was getting in the way.  His staff saw him as not inclusive in making decisions that affected them, his colleagues pointed out a tendency to push too hard for decisions and to not wait for crucial data.  But most dismaying for Brian was that his boss, who had always been his champion, was also raising concerns about how he got his good results as well as the results themselves. Encouraging Comfort with Change – The Challenge for Today’s Leader

Now there are two words that don’t belong together – comfort and change!  Authors O’Connor and Fiol, in a 2006 article titled ‘Handling Emotional Reactions to Change’, cite research that links common negatively viewed emotions to change: fear, insecurity, loss of control, separation or isolation, frustration, and anxiety.  Hardly sounds like the dictionary’s definition of ‘comfort’: ‘something that adds to one’s ease of living’, does it?
